Is it at an
ideal weight?
Weight alone isn't enough — body condition is what matters. The 1–9 scale helps you tell whether your pet is underweight, ideal or overweight.
1
Very underweight
UnderweightRibs, spine and pelvis visible from a distance. No fat, loss of muscle mass.
3
Underweight
UnderweightRibs easily felt with minimal covering. Obvious waist, minimal abdominal fat.
5
Ideal
IdealRibs felt with a light fat cover. Visible waist from above, tucked-up abdomen from the side.
7
Overweight
OverweightRibs hard to feel. Waist barely visible, fat deposits over the back and tail base.
9
Obese
OverweightRibs not palpable. Heavy fat, distended abdomen — increased health risk.
How to check at home
- Ribs: should be easily felt with a light cover — like the back of your hand.
- Waist: looking from above, there should be an inward «tuck» behind the ribs.
- Abdomen: from the side, it should be tucked up toward the rear, not hanging.
