When something blocks the airway, every second is on the line. Stay calm and work through the steps below in order — but always keep an eye out for a bite.
Signs of choking
You'll know it straight away:
- Desperate effort to breathe, panic
- Frantic "pawing" at the mouth
- Blue or purple tongue and gums
- Noisy breathing — or no sound at all
Prevention
Keep away small toys or balls that fit down the throat, cooked bones and very large mouthfuls. Always pick toys in the right size.
What to do
First, take a look in the mouth: if you CLEARLY see the object, try to ease it out carefully, without pushing it deeper.
- Small pet: hold it upside down and give 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades
- Large pet: firm blows on the mid-back; if needed, thrusts below the ribs
- Repeat and set off for the clinic IMMEDIATELY
Very important
Even if the object comes out, drop by for a check — there may be a leftover injury or fragment. And mind your hands: a panicking pet bites without meaning to.
